To Drive or Not To Drive... - Hallie Golden, Stony Brook Independent

Chrissy Simpson, a senior double majoring in business and music, commutes from Garden City, which at best takes her about an hour. And at worst, as she recalled, more than two hours. The U.S. Energy Information Administration showed that the average price of gas in New York State is about $3.70 per gallon. In Simpson's case-- if she drives about 65 miles a day-- she will probably be spending a little more than $1,500 on gas during the fall and spring semester. Factoring in her yearly car insurance of $1,200 and any maintenance her car may require, she will be spending at least $3,000 to commute for those two semesters.
